Millennial musical theater fans are not only familiar with these iconic shows but have probably even sung a few of their iconic songs during show-tune karaoke.
But what about The Rink?
Woman of the Year?
The Happy Time?
With songs spanning nearly three decades, North Raleigh Arts and Creative Theatre’s production of The World Goes ‘Round is a delightful evening of music and dance. The lighthearted revue weaves audiences through the prolific and thoroughly entertaining songbook of composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb.
Director Yvonne Anderson has assembled a cohesive ensemble of seven who play off each other like a seasoned troupe. The intimate theater setting allows the audience to watch each performer make creative choices during the comic group numbers. The most ambitious of the show’s musical numbers, from The Rink, showcases the inventive work of choreographer Isabella Murray in a memorable piece unlikely to be replicated on Triangle stages anytime soon.
Triangle veterans Molly Hamelin and Chris Maxwell delighted in a rousing rendition of “Arthur in the Afternoon.” Benji Taylor Jones’ performance combined her brilliant acting with vocals not previously seen on a Triangle stage.
Nicole Montijo led off the Chicago montage as the seductive Velma Kelly with “All That Jazz.” Then, Jaret Preston evoked an audible response from the audience with his expressive performance of “Mr. Cellophane.” Craig Libman showed off his comedic chops as a sadistic choreographer in “Pain.” And making her Triangle debut, Lindsey Walsh captivated the crowd with her strong vocals.
Although the show’s revue format does not tell a specific story, the musical numbers skillfully transition between the humorous, romantic, and poignant. When the audience is invited to sing “New York, New York” during the show’s finale, it’s hard to believe that two-plus hours have passed. It’s a welcome respite as tried and true as apple spice from Sara Lee’s kitchen.
