Raleigh Little Theatre’s Teens Tackle the Virtual Realm with SHE KILLS MONSTERS
Sarah Bock is a 13-year-old actress, singer, dancer, voice-over actress, and model based in Raleigh, North Carolina.
With theaters dark across the country, Raleigh Little Theatre’s She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms provides a much needed heart-warming and creative theatrical experience.
Based on Oui Nguyen’s original play, and adapted by the talented teens in Raleigh Little Theatre’s Teens on Stage and Teens Backstage program, She Kills Monsters, dives into themes of acceptance and inclusion while following so-called ‘basic’ teen, Agnes Evans, following the death of Agnes’ less popular sister, Tilly. Agnes finds her Tilly’s Dungeons and Dragons book and dives into her sister’s make-believe world, going on a quest to discover more about her sister.
While not the traditional way of viewing live theater, the production quality of She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms is well done with beautiful costumes, lighting, and most impressive of all, animations and graphics. Scenes that couldn’t be shown solely with the actors, due to the limitations of the production being virtual and shot in separate locations, were presented with effective animations.
Although at some points it is difficult to tell where a certain scene is taking place, the story still translates well. All of the actors are amazing, but Sean Moss, who played the role of Chuck stood out. Moss stole every scene he was in, even if all he had do to in the scene was eat a bag of chips. His versatility really came through, and he had a keen ability to make the audience laugh with his incredible comedic timing while also keeping viewers on the edge of their seats in the more dramatic and suspenseful scenes. Caroline Farmer who plays the lead role of Agnes Evans gracefully develops her character beautifully throughout the show. Farmer, as well as Jenna Davenport, who plays Agne’s sister, Tilly, bring a refreshing authenticity to their characters.
Minus a few inevitable tech issues such as distracting background noises, Raleigh Little Theatre’s production of She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms, transitions very nicely to the virtual platform and is a great show for theater-goers missing the live theater experience.
She Kills Monsters runs through August 1st. For more information or tickets to the virtual show, visit https://raleighlittletheatre.org/shows/she-kills-monsters-virtual-realms/.
